In July 2010 the Point Nepean National Park Draft master plan was released for comment.  The community consultation phase of the master plan took place from 24 July to 23 August. Throughout the month the design team and Parks Victoria staff attended community events including two local farmers markets, a stall on the main street of Sorrento, and held an Information Day at the park. The discussions with the community, and written comments submitted were varied, feedback included accommodation, water based activities, and conserving natural and cultural values. The project team is now working hard to ensure feedback received from the community is incorporated into the final master plan.

Sunday 8 August the Point Nepean Draft Master Plan Information Day was held with 150 members of the community attending the information presentations and tours of the Quarantine Station.

Initial concern from people attending the information day was regarding the nature of the proposed hotel development, however after the  information sessions, tours and Q&A tables with the consultants, many attendees gained a much better understanding of the careful way in which the Parks Victoria proposes to retain the ambiance of the Quarantine Station through adaptive re-use of the existing buildings.

The following comments were from visitors on the day:

“The Park needs to be viable, so some commercial activities are needed, but they must be sympathetic to the site”

“I like the opportunity to bring the history of the place alive through creative interpretation programs”

“I think the camping/backpackers is a good idea.”

Possum magic: New hope for Victoria’s Mountain Pygmy-possums

Victorian scientists have made a scientific and conservation breakthrough with one of Australia’s rarest marsupials, the endangered Mountain Pygmy-possums (Burramys parvus), after two ‘genetically isolated’ populations bred in the wild for the first time.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE), the University of Melbourne and Healesville Sanctuary took emergency action to halt the rapid decline in possum numbers and counter the genetic inbreeding in the Mt Buller population of the Mountain Pygmy-possum.

A temporary re-location of Mt Hotham males into the territory of females at Mt Buller during the breeding season has succeeded in producing the first wild-born male pygmy possum with genetic features from both populations. The planning team is continuing to develop and refine the work-in-progress draft management plan. A workshop was held in November 2010 to develop conservation objectives for the planning areas ecosystems and threats. The workshop included participants from Parks Victoria and DSE with specialist environmental, flora, fauna, and fire ecology expertise, as well as members of the advisory committees and Traditional Owners. The 6th meeting of the Alpine Advisory Committee (AAC) was held on 10th February 2011. The planning team has also again met with the Victorian Alps Traditional Owner Reference Group (VATORG) in 24th February 2011. The Environment and Science Advisory Group (EASG) is also to meet in March 2011.

Parks Victoria attended the Greenwells Fly Fishing Expo at Greenfield Park in Albury on the 29th of August.

James Hackel and Wendy Luke of the planning team provided locals and fly fishers with an update on the preparation of the draft plan and information about using wePlan. This was a great opportunity for recreational fishers to voice their interests in the planning area and get involved in the planning process.

Despite the rain, a great day was had by all.
